"StrataSphere" Wind Sculpture
24" diameter sphere
copper, brass, stainless steel bearings

A unique kinetic sculpture designed to move with the wind. It has five independent revolving elements that use copper cones to capture air currents of almost any speed. Its movement is similar to gyroscopes within gyroscopes as the entire sculpture takes on a random yet graceful spinning motion in the wind. All joints are silver-brazed by hand for extraordinary strength. StrataSphere is made of brass, copper and stainless steel, all materials that will not rust. Precision miniature stainless steel ball bearings are used at all pivot points for friction-free movement. Price: $1998 with small base, $2330 with 40” tall pedestal.

Australian jarrah and brass

Award winning (1st place: 2002 Box and Container Show, Northwest Fine Woodworking Gallery, Seattle, WA and 3rd place: 2002 Design in Wood, Accessories division, San Diego County Fair) Cosmo was designed to challenge the field of wood turning. Exhibiting a combination of exacting turning and sculpting techniques along with very precise custom made hardware, Cosmo makes a primarily sculptural piece functional. This piece was featured in 400 Boxes, Lark Books, 2004.

Helix, an outdoor garden kinetic sculpture, is built to move with the wind. It has two independent revolving spiral arms that use copper "leaves" to capture even gentle breezes. Millennium Lamp
22" diameter shade, 27" tall
glass, brass, aluminum, mahogany

this is a contemporary style desk lamp for the new millennium. Featuring a slumped glass shade topped with a spun aluminum crown, this lamp is offered with dual independently switched circular fluorescent tubes, or an incandescent 4-bulb array with dimmer. The central core column encases a neon colored (choice of colors available) tube that creates an alluring presence. The solid mahogany base adds warmth to the assembly, while the precision of the machined aluminum gives it the predominant modern deco look.

Perihelion
Perihelion
19"w 45”l x 9"d
mahogany, curly maple, wenge, jarrah, imbuya, aluminum, Avonite®

This sculpture was an exercise in the exploration of combining intersecting planes and spheres, using wood, aluminum and a resin-based granite, and searching for a balanced proportion that would blend these materials and their geometric shapes. To emphasize the delineation between the wood and aluminum, I gave the aluminum’s leading edges a chrome-like polish and bead-blasted the adjacent faces. This piece was honored with a juror’s award from the Furniture Society at the Mesa Arts Center, Mesa, Arizona and was featured in Woodwork West Magazine, 2001, Wood Art Today by Donna Milach, 2003 and 400 Boxes, Lark Books, 2004.

"Electrolux Rural" Mail Box Sculpture
39" tall
recycled material

The ubiquitous and monotonous mailbox blights our cities and towns. This is my contribution to changing all that. Those old vacuum cleaners were design statements of their own—they need to be cherished! A sleek old deco Electrolux (even the name was cool) combined with a restaurant coffee maker embodies the "box." About 100lbs of tools and interesting hardware comprise the pedestal.
