This sculpture was an exercise in the exploration of combining intersecting planes and spheres, using wood, aluminum and a resin-based granite, and searching for a balanced proportion that would blend these materials and their geometric shapes. To emphasize the delineation between the wood and aluminum, I gave the aluminums leading edges a chrome-like polish and bead-blasted the adjacent faces. Perihelion is 45" tall and 19" wide. This piece was honored with a jurors award from Wendy Maruyama at the recent "Anything with a Drawer" show at the Mesa Arts Center in Mesa, Arizona.
