Deco Credenza
24"w x 53"l x 32"h
walnut, sapele, wenge, 9 additional wood species, aluminum

Intended as a reflection of the best of the Art Deco period (with a little Detroit thrown in), this credenza combines 12 different woods with some of the finest California walnut veneer recently produced, along with faux granite Avonite®, polished aluminum, pomele figured makori veneer and wenge. Four doors and two drawers make it extremely functional as well as a piece of art. The veneered doors and table top balance nicely with the solid legs, drawer fronts and bottom stretcher. The jarrah trim accents the three main elements, and the custom-made pulls complete the piece. CoverBuffet
Nouveau Buffet
28"w x 91"l x 87"h
mahogany, glass, bronze, Corian®

My largest, most time-intensive single piece to date, this freestanding unit was built with mostly solid construction to allow for the heavily carved and sculpted curves throughout. This buffet was crafted from just two pieces of phenomenal mahogany lumber. The lower doors and drawer fronts were veneered as bent panels, and the bronze door/drawer pulls were hand cast exclusively for this piece. Much of the carving was aided by own designed and built carving machine—for those of you interested in such things, click here for an article/interview which includes photos and a description of the machine. This piece was featured in Custom Furniture Source Book, Taunton Press, 2001, American Crafts Magazine, 2001, Woodwork, 2001, Wood Art Today by Donna Milach, 2003, and 500 Cabinets, Lark Books, 2009.

Room Ensemble
40”w x 84”l x 29”h
mahogany, marble, glass, upholstery

Overall concept design by Vicky Tsi, this room ensemble was a collaboration with several craftsmen, including upholsterer, Tony Wuichet. The large cylinders are each a single unit, and veneered both interior and exterior. The top criss-cross mouldings were laminated from individual layers that were each tapered to produce continuous compound curves that were fastidiously hand carved. Winner of Honorable Mention in Veneer Tech's Craftsman's Challenge 2007.

Maple Credenza
22"w x 65"l x 32"h
maple

This credenza features a dovetailed, solid case with the laminated legs inlayed into the sides. Carefully sculpted and shaped, the legs appear to grow from the sides as if carved from a single piece of wood. The smooth gliding tambour doors roll fully back into the case to reveal 3 interior sections with adjustable shelving to give the piece a variety of uses. Beneath the tambour are 3 precisely fit drawers whose fronts were cut from the same piece of wood to accommodate the continuous sculpted curve that also doubles as a drawer pull. This credenza was featured in Fine Woodworking Magazine, 1984 and Design Book 5, the Taunton Press, 1987.

DecoBarCabinet
Art Deco Bar Cabinet
48"w x 17"l x46"h
Swiss pearwood, jarrah

The opening bar cabinet was a very popular piece decades ago. I designed and fabricated all of the interior metalwork, including the linked opening mechanisms. Swiss pearwood veneer was used for the exterior case and sunburst pattern on the front, providing a nice contrast to the solid jarrah legs.

Deco Hall Cabinet
23"w x 49 7/8"l x 15"d
mahogany, wenge, anigre and 11 additional species

Strongly influenced by art deco, this cabinet required exacting marquetry techniques using various wood species to provide the color for the door designs. Wenge legs with mahogany trim support the pomele sapele case crowned with a mahogany and sapele top. The maple interior shelving is laid out to allow the cabinet to be used as a liquor cabinet but not intended to limit it to such use. Elliptical Display Cabinet
38"w x 28"l x 72"h
bubinga, wenge

This solid door display case, with its hand rubbed finish, combines some traditional art nouveau curves with contemporary simplicity. The oval shaped case and doors were formed and veneered using the vacuum press technique. The sinuous vertical lines of the case sweep upward along the body of the case and are sculpted to form both the legs and the door pulls as they continue up to meet and support the sculpted solid wenge top. The doors themselves swing on hand-made brass hinges using ball-bearing pivots for exceptionally smooth action.
